Sherlock

What were they thinking? Seriously? When I heard that the Japanese magazine named Young Ace was going to serialize an adaptation of the hit BBC series, Sherlock, I knew it was going to be bad. Recently I read the first chapter of the manga, and rest assured, it was the only chapter that I will read. The manga is comparable to Batman: Child of Dreams. For those of you who have never had the misfortune of reading that, I am saying that this manga belongs in the dustbin. It's true that I am heavily biased against medium hopping, but in this case, it's a terrible adaptation of an adaption of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

That's on the first page of the chapter, so you know, right from the start that it's gonna be bad. Nice. Also, what a waste of a colored page. Seriously

That nose is not proportional. This bothers me. 

And the drawings look pretty bat too. The noses seriously bug me. It's not a laughing matter.

But that's all I've got to say on this travesty. Until I decide what I should badly review next, have fun and read comics.
  

Trubble Club

With a name like Trubble Club, you know that it's gonna be off the hook. In fact, Trubble Club is so off the hook that the hook itself turned into a horrifying monster and is attempting to preform unspeakable sexual acts with a lamppost. That being said, this comic is not for kids. It is completely terrifying.

Trubble Club is actually a collective of underground comix artists from Chicago, making some of the most mind boggling stuff I have ever seen. And I've read Black Hole by Charles Burns. Regardless, you're in for a number of laughs, that number being uncountable though less then the moments of absolute disgust and general confusion.

Animal Man

With all the reboots that Marvel and DC are lauding, and the mass exodus of talented creators leaving the big two, it's easy to see that mainstream superhero comics are going swiftly down the drain...if they weren't down it already. So when people talk about there favorite superheroes, they rarely talk about how good the comics that star that superhero are. The real question is: What is the best superhero comic? For me, it isn't Watchmen or any Batman comic. It's Grant Morrison's Animal Man

The first 26 issues of Animal Man, written by Morrison, relaunched after the Crisis continuity event, heavily featured tons of environmental issues and surrealism.

Morison as an author brings many new things to superhero comics, which for the most part are ignored by the community at large. The character, the everyman Buddy Baker, is completely generic. But that's the point

Yes these are the coolest superheroes ever

The most innovative part of Animal Man, the part that makes it the best superhero comic ever, it the fact that Morrison introduces the DC continuity into the plot, and then obscure characters fight the DC Universe in order to escape oblivion. It's complicated. Typical Morrison

The comic also breaks the fourth wall in a major way, for Animal Man travels through it and to our universe's  Glasgow and has a chat with Morrison himself. (According to Morrison's later work, All-Star Superman, our universe is created by Superman)

Narrative Corpse

Have you ever tried to write a chain story with a bunch of friends? Well when a group of 69 underground comixs artists decided to start their own chain-story, it blossomed in to a 5 year long project with each artist contributing only 3 panels. Edited by Art Spiegelman (Maus), and including creators such as R. Crumb, Will Eisner, and Los Bros Hernandez, it is a truly interesting read.

The story, while only slightly rational, follows the confusing adventures of Corpsey, a stick figure. A lot of work has been put into the character design. Totally

Cross-dressing. Always a good idea 

Narrative Corpse, due to it's underground comixs nature, is not for kids, and it is not readily available. You could order it online, or, if you are in the Lehigh Valley, you can get it from the Moravian Reeve Library.

Saint Oniisan

Have you you ever wanted to read a comic about Jesus, the Buddha and their incredible vacation to Japan? Not really. It's not that important to read, but you should know that it exists, because the novelty of such a series in just an astounding concept. Besides the novelty, it's boring. If you've read as many manga series as I have, you begin to realize that a lot of them are the same....and tons of jokes in manga are actually puns that only work in the Japanese languages. I don't know Japanese...so I don't get many of the jokes. Neither will you...that is if you have the same mastery of the Japanese language that I do. 

The Buddha is a really great series and you need to read it

But besides that it has tons of pop culture references, from other Japanese comics (such as Tezuka's masterpiece, Buddha), western celebration, and the length of a certain Disney character's skirt. The last actually is central to the plot of a chapter.   

Remember that Buddhist parable? 

Dr. McNinja

The only thing you need to know about Dr McNinja is that it is a colorful tale of tropes and general badass-ery that is published online tri-weekly and can be read for free so there is absolutely no excuse for not reading this whimsical tale about an Irish Ninja who is also a doctor 

Or is it about Doctor who is also an Irish Ninja? 

Along with his receptionist who just happens to be a gorilla, and his 12 year old, gun-toting, and mustachioed sidekick, the good Doctor gets himself into many predicaments in both the fields of Medicine and vigilantism.

The Demon

The Demon may not be perfect, but it's pretty entertaining. The character, Etrigan, and his host, Jason Blood,  are joined together through a soul graft engineered by none other than Merlin. (yes, that Merlin) Basically, for the first half of the series in the 90's, Etrigan messes around until he's fed up with messing around.

There are also a lot of guest stars in this series, ranging from Robin and Superman, to the lesser known Lobo. The only problem is that this series takes place in Gotham City....and Batman is nowhere to be found. Batman is everywhere in Gotham these days.

The secret desire of all janitors is to have a harem of  Wonder  Women

He runs for president, (You'll never see his birth certificate or tax returns), makes sweet lovin', ruins a man's life, and defeats a magical janitor with a harem of Wonder Women. And that's only 5 issues. This guy gets a lot done

Oh that's a clever rhyme

I should mention that Etrigan speaks in rhymes, and occasionally his fails miserably at them. He eventually gets around to taking a road trip through hell with Lobo, a Minotaur, and a pillow that talks. Yes this guy is that cool

There is also a musical issue. It's crazy.

Shootings

Hopefully you all know about the shootings in Colorado last night. I express my condolences to the victims or people who know the victims. But this wouldn't have happened if our country had stricter gun-control laws. 

20th Century Boys

What is 20th Century Boys? It is a manga that will knock you socks off and then some. It will knock your socks off and your friends and families socks off. Socks will be all over the place. This series, by Naoki Ursawa, is pretty hard to describe without revealing some pretty big spoilers, so this review will be pretty short. 

The story involves, in brief, a childhood fantasy, a cult, an epidemic, and a robot thing. But don't let that lack-luster overview keep you from reading this master-piece. 

The antagonist of this story is the mysterious Friend, the leader of a cult whose identity is unknown, which just adds to the enormous mystery that encompasses the whole plot. This story has more twists than a road through the Alps. And those twists are awesome. Read this series. Read the volumes if you can get your hands on them or read it online.  

Gunshow

What do you get when you cross internet shenanigans with the styles of underground comixs? You get Gunshow, the weirdest web comic around.

Yes this comic is not for everybody

Written by KC Green, Gunshow is a comic that is filled with the nonsensical and the occasional crude humor that is not for everybody. But, if you like crazy animals, pointless jokes, and occasional fan-fiction, Gunshow is the comic for you.

Cat+historical figures=joke

While this comic does contain a good amount of nerd culture jokes, unlike most comics that pander to nerds, Gunshow contains elements in its art and writing that hearken back to the underground comix movement. 

But that's besides the point. This comic is funny regardless of it's art or its influences and you should really give it a try. 

Lots of anime jokes, in fact, the is a whole story line involving  an anime club
